From the Tree Lighting Ceremony to the countless New Year’s Eve parties, December is always packed with great events and family outings.

Yo Ho Ho Ho: A Pirate’s Christmas

Written and directed by Ken Parks with original music by Rick Illes “Yo, Ho, Ho, Ho” tells the satirical story of heroic pirate captain Jack Narrow as he races against the clock to help Santa’s helper, Christmas Eve, save The Holidays. Jack’s arch nemesis, Captain Mimosa, has stolen the famous “Naughty and Nice List” and plans to hold it for a pirate’s ransom.

Food is available from an á la carte menu. The menu includes chili dogs, pizzas, burritos, beer, soda and scrumptious desserts.

Plays December 3rd thru January 2nd, 2010 with special Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday performances the week of Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

The Plight Before Christmas

In this new Christmas Melodrama adaptation, Ebeneezer Humbug is about to “raise the dickens” by foreclosing on everyone in town and forcing Felicity Fuzziwig to marry him – much to the dismay of his clerk, Bob Scratchit.

The Plight before Christmas will continue on Thursday nights (8 p.m.), Friday nights (8 p.m.) Saturday nights (8 p.m.) and Sunday matinees beginning December 5th, (2 p.m.) through Sunday, December 26th.

Long Beach Playhouse is proud to be a drop-off participant in the Long Beach Community Food Drive. Bring your canned food donations before shows or weekdays after 10:00 a.m. or on weekends after 3:00 p.m.

If you live in the Long Beach area and love photography, come out this weekend to witness the story of Lakewood as you’ve never seen it before.

This Saturday, Tom Johnson’s photo exhibit, “Lakewood Project,” can be viewed at Phantom Galleries LA, 350 E. 3rd Street, in Long Beach. An artist’s reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Before picking up the camera, Tom spent more than 10 years modeling in Europe, and New York. Though he enjoyed modeling, it wasn’t until he stepped behind the camera that he found his true passion.

Tom’s passion for photography and his need to find authenticity through the camera lens, led him to focus on the “Lakewood Project,” a photographic journal of the streets and neighborhoods where he grew up.

These days, he walks the streets capturing simple moments to help him piece together the story of Lakewood. It’s a project that he has been working on for the last eight years.

Tom’s vivid representation of history and life of his hometown will make you think differently about world around you.

Tom Johnson’s Lakewood photographs will be on display until August 2, 2010.

Just like many other Bixby Knolls residents, I spent my Memorial Day at the Petroleum Club’s Summer Pool Opening event.

My family and I had a lot of fun.

Judging begins at 12:00 p.m. Come join us at the first Long Beach Sunday Farmers Market and the fall harvest by showcasing your best loved pie recipe. Entry is open to bakers of all ages! Restauranteurs welcome!

Deliver your pie and a copy of your original recipe (or your favorite recipe with the source sited). Multiple submissions welcome. Pies will be judged by a jury of your peers. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be awarded and all recipes will be included in the Long Beach Sunday Market Cookbook!

Garage Sale in California Heights, Bixby Knolls

This Saturday, November 14^th,  between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm, residents of the Cal Heights neighborhood located in the area of Bixby Knolls will be taking part in a Community Garage Sale.

The sale is located between Wardlow on the South, 37^th on the North, Atlantic Ave on the West, and Orange Ave. to the East.

Residents living on Olive, Lime, Lemon, California, Lewis, Cerritos, Orange, & Myrtle Avenue, and 36th & 37th Street, will be selling a plethora of household and other items.

Overall, close to 30 families will be participating in the Community Garage Sale organized by Shelly St. Denis and Kirk Mulhearn, Real Estate Brokers who co-manage the Prudential California Realty office.

Unfortunately, it’s too late to sign up as a vendor for the community event as October 29^th was the deadline, but there’s no reason you can’t join hundreds of your neighbors who will be strolling the streets of Bixby Knolls looking for treasure.

We Love Long Beach (WLLB) is a non-profit (501c3) community organization founded by Scott and Robin Jones in 2008. As fourth generation residents of the City of Long Beach, the siblings started the organization after extending a breakfast invitation to fifty of their neighbors. It was a free breakfast in the park with no other agenda than for neighbors to have the chance to get to know one another.

Let’s continue what they’ve started.
